WHAT IS CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the two most abundant phytocannabinoids (cannabinoids that come from plants) found in both the marijuana and hemp plants. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD will not get either you or your pet high in any way. CBD has no psychotropic properties at all.
Most CBD products are made using CBD that’s been sourced from hemp plants because they contain less than 0.3% THC. CBD is a natural compound that’s extremely versatile and is available in a variety of different forms, including CBD oil, CBD edibles, CBD tinctures, and CBD creams and topicals.
WHAT IS THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM?
Inside all mammals is a neurological and biological system that is designed to process natural cannabinoids known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The easiest way to imagine what the ECS is and how it works is to think of it as the eyes and ears of the brain. The ECS monitors everything that’s happening in the brain and then sends a signal to the cells to help them formulate the correct cellular response.
The ECS is made up of a series of receptors, the CB1 and CB2 receptors that are spread throughout the body. The CB1 receptors are mostly found in the brain, gastrointestinal tract, reproductive organs, lungs, vascular system, and muscles. It’s the most abundant receptor.
The CB2 receptor can be found in the skin, glial cells, spleen, and bones. Both the CB1 and CB2 receptors will be found in smaller numbers in the immune system, liver, bone marrow, pancreas, and brain stem.
WHAT CAN CANNABINOIDS AND THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM DO?
It’s believed that the ECS controls a variety of different bodily functions, including digestion, moods, circulation, sleep cycles, pain response, immune function, and more. When any of these systems aren’t functioning correctly, CBD could help to restore balance and correct the issue.
Scientists believe that the ECS is responsible for maintaining balance and harmony (homeostasis) inside our internal systems. Cannabinoids monitor what’s happening, and when they notice that something isn’t doing what it’s supposed to, they send a signal to the cell, which triggers the correct cellular response.
The brain naturally produces chemicals known as endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids produced by the brain and body interact in much the same way that cannabinoids do, monitoring what’s happening, and helping our cells to trigger appropriate cellular responses.
When you think about what the brain does, monitoring, and controlling every aspect of our lives, it’s easy to see that the brain couldn’t possibly do all this alone. It needs help to connect to all the different organs, and it does this through its signaling system, the ECS.
Endocannabinoids and cannabinoids travel throughout the body via the circulatory system interacting with the receptors located throughout the body. When they notice that one system isn’t functioning the way that it should, they signal to the brain to start making the changes that it needs to restore balance and harmony.
However, what happens when your body or your pet’s body isn’t producing enough endocannabinoids? That’s where cannabinoids like CBD can step in to fill the missing piece. They perform a similar role to the endocannabinoids that the body naturally produces. If your pet isn’t 100%, then it could be because they’re deficient in one of their endocannabinoids.
CBD and other cannabinoids aren’t a magical cure, and what works for one pet may not always work for another. It’s essential if your pet is currently taking any medication that you speak to your vet or healthcare professional before trying CBD as it can influence the way your pet’s body processes some pharmaceutical medications.
